Hu Jintao calls for enhancing “soft power” of Chinese culture

In his keynote speech to the 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), President Hu Jintao emphasized the important role of culture development. Besides the advanced goals of economic and social development, he indicated that China should “enhance culture as part of the soft power of our country to better guarantee the people’s basic cultural rights and interests.” Also, he proposed several specific plans, including promoting literature and artistic work, launching nonprofit cultural programs and developing the cultural industry, and so on.
