CALL FOR PAPERS
The inaugural Emerging Voices for U.S.-China Cooperation conference will be held on October 16, 2024, as an in-person event in Beijing, China. The conference is co-organized by The Carter Center and the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies. Our purpose is to serve as a forum for early career professionals and academics working to advance opportunities for U.S.-China cooperation.
We are seeking proposals for individual, policy-focused papers that analyze the past, present, or future of U.S.-China cooperation with no restrictions in terms of the location, project-type, or time period covered within the paper. Proposed papers should be as targeted as possible in their policy components. The organizers will provide travel and accommodation for accepted participants.
Eligibility
Participants must have completed a higher education degree within the last five years (2019 or later) or be currently enrolled in a relevant graduate studies program. Participants who have completed their degrees must be currently employed or affiliated with a governmental, nongovernmental, business, or academic organization that engages with U.S.-China relations as a regular aspect of its operation. Participation is limited to citizens of the United States and the People’s Republic of China.
Topics of Interest
We are open to new insights that challenge the dominant wisdom on the possibilities for U.S.-China cooperation. Proposals can cover a broad range of topics, including, but not limited to:
- Trade & Economic Cooperation
- Education
- Climate Change
- Technology
- International Law
- Development
- Conflict Resolution
- Security
The selection committee will pay special attention to papers that examine U.S.-China cooperation in a third country in the form of historical analysis (e.g., U.S.-China cooperation regarding Ebola virus in West Africa, or U.S.-China cooperation in broker peace in South Sudan) or propositions for future opportunities.
Award
In addition to providing travel and accommodation, two participants (one from the United States and one from China) will received the Jimmy Carter Best Paper on U.S.-China Cooperation award, which included a $1,000 USD prize. Four runners up (two from the United States and two from China) will receive an award of $500 USD
Submission Requirements
For consideration, please submit a 250-word abstract along with a two-page CV, an unofficial transcript from your most recent degree-granting university (or current university for graduate students), and proof of affiliation with an organization focused on U.S-China relations.
If your proposal is accepted, a full paper (3,000 to 5,000 words) will be due prior to the conference.
